The 40-mile Lariat Loop, a Colorado Scenic Byway also intersects through the area, and features a glimpse at more than 150 million years of Colorado´s past. Historically, the park was chosen as the location of a summer home for the Presidents of the United States and building began in the mid-1900s. The effort was led by local visionary, John Brisben Walker, also a magazine publisher and automobile entrepreneur. Walker himself built a stunning mountain castle that eventually burned to the ground in 1918. The remains of the stone walls and several fireplaces are still found on the park grounds today.
