Highlands Ranch, one of the most recognized communities in Colorado, has also received national attention. Considered one of the most progressive master-planned communities in the nation, Money Magazine ranked it 12th in the country as one of the best places to live. With affordable real estate options set among first-class recreational amenities and award-winning Douglas County schools, it´s not hard to see why. Highlands Ranch offers homes for all types of buyers from the low $200s to more than $1 million and is only 12 miles south of Denver. The average price for a condominium is $241,827 and the average price for a single-family home is $343,226.

The Shea Homes community is estimated to reach completion in 2010, with an anticipated population of more than 90,000 residents, occupying 36,700 homes. The first residents moved into the area in 1981.

Highlands Ranch currently includes 22,000 acres in various stages of development, and features numerous neighborhoods, including The Hearth Overlook Collection. Featuring homes priced in the low $400s, homes in The Hearth are designed with cottage-style accents and range from 2,751 to 3,113 square-feet. The Hearth is located in Southridge, one of the four neighborhoods in Highlands Ranch. The Tattered Cover, one of the most well-regarded independent book sellers in the nation, now operates its third location here. Highlands Ranch is also conveniently located near Park Meadows Shopping Center, and the Denver Technological Center (DTC). When it comes to downtown, residents are just a light rail ride away from Invesco Field at Mile High, Pepsi Center, Coors Field and shopping and dining.

Highlands Ranch School Information

Children in Highlands Ranch attend schools in the Douglas County School District, guided by a mission "to provide an educational foundation that allows each student to reach his or her individual potential." There are 19 elementary schools, four middle schools, and five high schools in Highlands Ranch.

Douglas County students have outperformed the state in every grade and every subject tested by the Colorado Student Assessment Program (CSAP). On the most recent State Accountability Report, 86 percent of Douglas County schools achieved a high or excellent rating ? the best in the Denver metro area. Comprehensive high school programs in sports, music, forensics, marketing, business and journalism have earned state and national recognition. Coupled with its well-researched and integrated curriculum, Douglas County credits its teachers with making a difference. Nearly half of the district´s 3,000 teachers have their master´s or other advanced degrees.
